Courage and Miscellaneous Things!

It was just a day like any other. I checked into my tweet deck to send few tweets and read some as well. For some X reason I visited the website of one of the writers that I happen to follow on twitter - Caroline Smailes. I have visited her site numerous times to read specific posts and leave 'pick me' comments but never took the time to leisurely look around and that’s just what I did on that day. Look around. That’s where I found it and it hit home; hit hard I must say and since then I have spent serious time in self-contemplation.

She talks about how a reference to someone as a ‘nearly woman’ got her into facing her now or never moment. Well what that Richard and Judy show did to her, her blog did to me. It pierced right into my mind, like I was shot or something. Lord! I was that 'nearly woman' wasn't I? Yes, yes, no point in denying now; it’s me alright. On hindsight, it is clear to me that all my life, I have been someone who has ‘nearly’ done something, ‘nearly’ achieved something, ‘nearly’ loved someone, ‘nearly’ experienced something and the like.

Look at my resume; it is an assortment of Bachelors in Computers, an MBA, and another Masters in Financial Economics, scholarships galore showing maybe I was somewhat good with multiple things. Traditional Indian heritage and upbringing ensured I was trained in classical dance and music. I seemed to like talking enough to be a decent orator through collage and put a few gold on the wall. I dabble in a bit of writing on this blog. To my eyes today, I look like a poor imitation of a Jack of All and definitely Master of none. But what really was my passion? What was my dream? The one thing I have been really passionate about all along (it should have been obvious to me long before now) was a good story. Writing was therapeutic, it was a hobby and though I haven’t openly admitted it, it was a dream too.

Every step in my life was a challenge. Nothing came easy, nothing landed on my lap and I for one was never ever lucky. But that did not stop me. I have fought every step of the way, fought for an education, fought for my right to live and fought for my family. People who are familiar with my story know all this and some. I truly believed that “Courage is not always a loud shout or roar, but a quiet voice at the end of the day saying I'll try again tomorrow” and try try and try is all I did. So you can ask now, is this self wallowing? No!

It’s me questioning myself, that, if indeed courage meant to keep on trying and never giving up, and I seemed to have done it determined to live and do something, then why was I not showing the same courage to make my dreams come true? What kept me at bay? What made me a ‘nearly’ person?

The roller coaster ride of life teaches us not to be afraid of facing challenges but I think I am afraid of failing myself and failing my dreams. After doing everything I can to stay afloat in this world, taking a shot at my dreams is the one thing where I lack self confidence. I determinedly never write about serious stuff or things that mean more than they should (reason why my blog is just about the frivolous). Inspite of all the stories and stars in my eyes, I just dare not share them. My heartfelt admiration, to Caroline and others who had the courage to live their dream. Now it’s my turn to decide, will I try to give my dreams a chance or remain as someone who ‘nearly’ tried?

SURPRISE SURPRISE !!

Am writing here after a really long time...KPR (as she calls herself I read) will probably fall out of her chair when she logs on next and sees this post.A logical question one might ask,and a very pertinent one at that would be too, would be why is Ashwini posting here after such a long time?Truth be told,I have no idea.I dont have anything to share,I dont have anything to report, or any news to give.I just read what K had written here, about how this is a place for her and her friends to vent. And I guess I came here to do just that :)

Next logical and pertinent question...what does Ashwini want to vent about? Will you believe it when I tell you thats there is nothing? It true,I dont think I have anything specific to vent about.I just felt like writing, and I ditn feel motivated to write on my other blog.No one seems to read what I write there anyways. So its rather demotivating to keep writing knowing no one but you is ever going to read those words. Here I think atleast K will read this.

Movie quotes reminded me,has anyone watched 'Before Sunrise' and 'After Sunset' I absolutely fell in love with those movies.Any idea where I can watch them online? There is a part in 'Before Sunrise' where they talk about broken dreams...I just love the part but cant remember the dialogues.LEt me know if you know where I can get this movie K.

This post is your surprise girl...if you feel like killing me,just remember I am very far away at the moment and there is no point letting your blood boil :P

Logging off...

My favourite movie quotes of all time - Part 1

You notice how these days everything I write about comes in parts???? Is it because there are so many wonderful things that make up numerous moments at various points in our bleach stretched lives or Is it because we are like children in Toys-r-us who might want something today but another thing tomorrow, not ready to commit permanantly to one set of things and hence in order to avoid appearing fickle minded we'd like others to think we have infact pre-thought everything and have this grand plan which we shall reveal in due course of time and ofcourse in parts :D Well this is a discussion for another post another day but for now here are some memorable lines according to me.

"Destiny is the bridge you build to the one you love" - My sassy girl

"I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her" - Notting Hill

"Look, I guarantee that we'll have tough times. And I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us will want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Because I know in my heart, you're the only one for me." - Runaway Bride

"If I forget to tell you later, I had a really great time tonight" - Pretty Woman

"Kevin: What about you? You don't have any needs? Jane: No. I'm Jesus." - 27 dresses

"People wait their whole lives to see an ex when things are going really good. it NEVER happens. You could make relationship history! " - Music & Lyrics

"Kat Ellis: You know what pisses me off? I've been spilling my guts all weekend and I don't know a thing about you. Nick Mercer: I'm allergic to fabric softener. I majored in comparative literature at Brown. I hate anchovies. And I think I'd miss you even if we never met" - The wedding date

"I'd rather fight with you than make love with anyone else." - The wedding date

"You're like the Yoda of escorts. Getting you on the phone was harder than getting into college" - The wedding date

"Sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people" - The Painted Veil

"Fester Fester Fester, Rot Rot Rot" -  French Kiss
(While on the topic of French Kiss, I must pause to elaborate that this line is definitely not the most memorable in the movie but it gets the mention as it is the most accessible one to write. Makes sense in a way doesnt it coz otherwise I'd have to write the whole damn screenplay over here as everything about this movie is memorable.)

Right, So I guess we'll make this part concise..Leaves a path for more parts doesnt it! (Snigger Snigger)

Hashtags

I am still new to the hashtags concept in Twitter..Consider me a novice experimenting with it still..As soon as I have had enough experience with that one I will post my views on it for sure as I seem to have an opinion about everything anyways :)

Love Thesis Part 1

Part 1 coz this is one topic on which opinions evolve(read differ) with time. So I am sure that many more sequels will follow.

It haunts me day and night...Every moment...Everything in sight.....Its a sweet agony I put myself through...In case you're wondering what the bloody hell I am talking about...its memories....my bittersweet memories. Love is a strange emotion and I am beginning to believe it as with the progress of time, love reveals many of its hidden facets one by one.
I once heard in some movie that you are only as happy as you choose to be; or was that you end up with the exact partner that you wish to have...hmmm (am confused..lol)..oh I got it...the line was and I quote " Every woman has the exact love life she wants" and I distinctly remember my reaction to it too and I quote " Bull Shit " :)
Nobody wants to be miserable or lonely or trapped or all the other words that are not spelled H-A-P-P-Y or be defined as deliriously delighted or....you get the picture don't you! We'll talk more about this subsequently.

There I was, a year ago, on a Saturday night, in a basement apartment at Carriage Hill Dr, with my roomies watching 1920 and drinking cha (not me....them); After the movie, we started talking about various things...God, Religion, Rabindranath Tagore.......and Love. One of my roomies, Mohor, started telling us about this incident that happened few years ago. A bengali girl and a bengali boy in love but from different castes. They went around for few years and then suddenly the guy steps back saying that his parents will never agree to an intercaste alliance (In today's day and age in educated families??? Well yes it happens but it is very easily walked around by the educated youth in metropolitan cities). The ever famous " I can't marry you but I will never marry anyone else either" or in this case it must be said " ami kokhono biye korbo na". The girl ofcourse was heartbroken and it took her a long time (few years) to collect herself and try to move on. She did bump into that guy at some later point to come to know that he fell in love and married a punjabi from Delhi. What was she supposed to infer? Did the guy just use his parents as an excuse to move away? Possible! It also could be that he dint find it in him to fight for this girl? Probable I say! A friend once told me that if a guy really wants a girl he will do anything to get her...So whom he wanted was evident wasnt it? But is the answer any consolation for the girl? Speculate!

We moved on to discuss a book "Bengal Nights" by world renowned Mircea Eliade and "It Does Not Die" by Maitreyi Devi. The names are english translations for "La nuit Bengale" (French) and "Na Hanyate" (Bengali) respectively. Both the books are semiautobiographical novels which details the passionate love affair of Alain, a young French engineer, and Maitreyi, the daughter of his Indian employer.

These books are commonly called the His and Her versions as they both are different projections of the same story. Their love story. This was later made into the movie that we know as "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam".  Here the Maitreyi was forced to leave Alain and marry an Indian doctor and every shred of evidence that Alain ever existed was destroyed including the tree Alain had planted in their household. It was as if Alain never came into their lives. These books make an interesting read for many reasons, apart from the story, one of which being the different points of view of the same story by the two genders involved in it. Broken heart and unfulfilled love made Mircea brush of the love story of his life as a purely physical relationship which ended at a point. He never could understand how Maitreyi Devi could forget their love, buckle under her parents and marry someone else and lead a normal life with kids and the daily chaos while he remained alone all his life in her wake. But being an Indian girl where family held the most power and the times were not so modern, she had two options :1) To run away with Mircea and watch her family die in shame 2) Forget her dreams and save her family. She gave up Mircea alright but put up a brave fight for a very long time against the arranged marriage. Only emotional blackmail could yeild the desired results finally.

What in life would equate to circumstances beyond your control and circumstances you just did not have the balls to fight around (or consider it worthy to fight for)? Clearly the second story was circumstances beyond control; 60 years past, in orthodox India, even Mircea being a guy could not fight and was driven away back to his country; so what could a girl do? But the first story, set in present India had much more chances to succeed but clearly the boy had not felt it worthy to fight for the girl in question which he undoubtedly did for the next one.

So two different love stories with a difference of 60 years or so spanning between them.....now tell me friends, how do I equate the line "Every woman has the exact love life that she wants" in these two situations? Do you think they got what they wanted?

Charlatan

He walks into a posh nightclub
Scans the crowd thru the hubbub
Has you marked in a trice
A rich blonde with cascading curls, easy to entice;
Oh yes! you are his prize
Whispering sweet nothings would suffice
Soon has you blushing, Ah it’s your vice

Lies, Lies, Lies…..
He Lies, Lies, Lies…..He’s a charlatan

He bewitches you with his eyes
They are bright green and telling lies
Mesmerizes you with all his guiles
Makes you forget your mum’s old advice
Takes you to bed in his stranger’s guise
Will then show you all the highs
Along with tonight's moonrise

Lies, Lies, Lies…..
He Lies, Lies, Lies…..He’s a charlatan

You wake up alone in the bed
Realize that you’ve been an airhead
You look at the empty house around
Stand in the middle of your room dumbfound
Somewhere in your head there’s a dull aching
No point looking for the engagement ring
Too late, you’ve fallen for all his raving

Lies, Lies, Lies…..
He Lies, Lies, Lies…..He’s a charlatan

Soon you’ll be as obsessed as me
Yeah, I was his long island AMY

Believe me it’s just not my heart that I want
But till I find him, such taverns I shall haunt
For now he is far away from here, that am sure
Cavorting with another pretty he’s soon gonna lure
Forget any rule that still applies
Even she won’t get any chance at goodbyes

Lies, Lies, Lies…..
He Lies, Lies, Lies…..He’s a charlatan

It must be LOVE!

The first rays of the morning sun
Caress and nudge me awake
I run my hands through the tousled sheets
And press them to my face
I smell the sexy fragrance
That remind me he was there
I feel the tingles all over again, I swear

I go thru the day in a daze
I am seeing life in a haze
I am in the constant state of excite
I feel like chasing that high kite

It must be love, what I am feeling
This feeling is damn appealing
It must be love and I am reeling
Let’s go on a long drive to Darjeeling

Running amok in the twilight shields
Butterflies, a million in the cornfields
I sit by the window dreaming
His crinkly gray bluish eyes
All laws of nature it defies
That certain way he looks at me
And chants my name “oh Rosalie”

It must be love, what I am feeling
Oh my heart it is that you’re stealing
It must be love and I am keeling
Gimme a kiss that’s all revealing

Dancing at the downtown pub
He gathered me close amidst the hub
I run my hand over his scraggly stubble
I tell you, am living in a big love bubble
Back in our bed, in his warm embrace
Am thrilled as he confessed “Love you Rosalie Grace”
Smiling, I drift away having finally found my place.

It must be love; I know I belong with you
I would die but could never bid adieu
It must be love, what a colorful hue
I love you and I know this to be true
It must be love…I know it is…….
